Drunken burps and a biting chill filled the air. That could only mean one thing….
It was Snoggletog on Berk once again.
Hiccup made a gentle sigh as he got up from bed and felt the cold wood beneath him, leaving iced splinters in his tunic and he brushed them off unfazed. It was always this way, of course. No snow had fallen on the ground yet but the promise of tomorrow still hung in the air. And as Hiccup inhaled, he tasted ice on his tongue.
He turned to see Toothless facing him, wide eyes already awake as was a dragons habit, but in the back of Hiccup’s mind he wondered what was that made Toothless sit there and watch him sleep rather than simply nudge him away like the dragon always did.
Toothless purred happily, laying his head on the edge of Hiccup’s bed and still regarding him with wide eyes, studying him.
“What’s up, bud?” Hiccup yawned, rubbing his eyes before petting Toothless gently. The dragons just nuzzled his hand, purring still as a look of content floated on his features.
“Well, you’re happy this morning.” Hiccup noted. Calm was more of the word, actually. Toothless usually bounced off the walls before Hiccup even had an eye open. Perhaps the chill was finally getting to him? Because last year’s Snoggletog the dragon was so bouncy Stoick had to make him sleep outside.
Hiccup decided to take advantage of one of the last respectably ‘warm’ days on Berk and went to the bath house, which now had an extra wing for dragons to bathe as well.
And by how crowded it was, it seemed a majority of the Vikings had the same idea as well. Seeing as how they all hadn’t bathed in weeks anyways….
It was open air, and had walls short enough to see around, but still tall enough that the boys were still separate from the women.
Hiccup, though, had a special spot. Toothless had made a point that he was staying with Hiccup even as he bathed but Hiccup had made a point to pick the only spot in the entire bath house where he not only had privacy….but had a small opened to a secluded spot of the girl’s bath.
“You finally remember how to get here, huh?” Hiccup teased as he same Astrid finally swim up. The steam of the bath kept her covered just as much as the low lying wall did. Hiccup leaned up a little and placed his arms cross over the ledge of the wall, smiling.
“Only you could find a back end spot of the bath house, Hiccup.” She smiled as well, but made no small movements to kiss his softly.
Toothless made a noise, and the two sprung apart almost instantly.
“Oh, hey Toothless. Why aren’t you in the dragon bath with the others?”
Toothless only regarded her with a look before nudging Hiccup’s back.
“He’s just been clingy today.” Hiccup scratched behind Toothless’s neck. “Given what happened last Snoggletog, that’s understandable.” He turned to the dragon, eyes sincere. “Don’t worry, bud, I’m not going to make you feel like you have to fly away this year.”
“But you know…all the dragons are going off to mate again.” Astrid added, leaning against the other side of the wall. “Shouldn’t Toothless at least try to find a mate?”
“We still can’t find any other Night Furies.” Hiccup sighed. “And I’m not too crazy about cross breeding.” He frowned. “Something tells me the Green Death was a result of that.”
“I highly doubt anything that comes out of Toothless breeding will look like the Green Death, Hiccup.” Astrid said, only to realize that it was probably his fear of the dragon talking. It was hard to believe, still, that two years ago Hiccup was so close to death at the hand of that dragon. She reached over the top of the wall and touched his damp shoulder, giving him her best smile.
Hiccup made his way back over to her. Even with the wall separating their bodies he still kissed her intensely, their hands lacing together over the top of the wall and the steam of the bath making them both a little light headed.
Even with Toothless’s sighs of discomfort the two didn’t break apart.
It was two days later after the first snow of the season that the dragons made their way back to the rookery. Astrid decided to fly with Stormfly there, and Hiccup and Toothless were in tow to fly her back.
“Wow, it’s so easy to forget how many dragons there are on Berk.” Astrid marveled. It was her first time being on the island, after all.
“Yeah, and we’ll have a lot more after this.” They both looked over at Stormfly who was being surrounded by four other Nadders, all wanting her attention.
Astrid laughed. “Stormfly’s such a heartbreaker.” She chuckled. “I think she’s getting a new mate this year.”
“Hmm, I guess even dragons get tired of who they’re with.” Hiccup looked over at Astrid with worried eyes, baiting her for what she’d say. But Astrid only smiled and took his hand.
“I wonder what my child will look like?” Astrid asked softly, but just loud enough so Hiccup could hear. He almost jolted out of her grasp, looking at her with shock before a playfulness within him finally sank in.
“Probably long, blonde hair, blue eyes…a biting tongue.” He smiled at her. “But enough beauty to make up for it.”
He was sure he was going to get slapped for that remark. But he was at a point in his relationship with Astrid where he had the ability to control when he got hit without her even knowing. He braced for impact, but instead something else hit him entirely.
“Or maybe green eyes and brown hair instead?” She stared blinding forward as she spoke, but even in the dusk breaking over the sky her blush was still evident.
Hiccup, on the other hand, blinked rapidly and almost numbed at her words. The impact greater than any punch she could’ve thrown him. But instead he was bold and kissed her burning cheek.
Stormfly called Astrid over, breaking away from the many Nadders vying for her attention to say goodbye to her rider. And a blushing Astrid readily hurried over, saying she’d be back shortly for the ride home.
As the Nadder and the girl spoke softly and affectionately to each other Hiccup walked back over to Toothless, who just seemed more than a little bit grumpy.
“Feeling lonely there, Toothless?” Hiccup placed a hand on the dragon, his eyes shining at the contact. Toothless perked his head up, licking Hiccup gently. “Aww, bud.” Hiccup whipped the saliva off of his face but Toothless never paid .
“You ever think you wanna mate, Toothless?” Hiccup asked instead of telling Toothless for the millionth time he preferred not to be licked.
The dragon simply looked at him in confusion, yet there was a hope in his eyes that gleamed far back behind his pupils. Hiccup tried to the read the expression…it was familiar, yet new. Like he had seen it before, just perhaps someplace else…
Hiccup sat down heavily and leaned again Toothless, the dragon’s warmth comforting. “We’ll find you someone soon, Toothless.” Hiccup promised. “I know we’ve been looking for a while, but there’s gotta be other Night Furies out there somewhere.” Toothless purred, snuggling in closer to Hiccup like he just couldn’t be close enough and Hiccup sighed, hugging Toothless close.
He knew it must’ve been hard for Toothless. Seeing all the other dragons mating and having someone and all Toothless had were humans.
And a few moments later, Astrid showed up. She seemed saddened and Hiccup beckoned her over. The girl sat next to him and they both leaned against Toothless while Hiccup put an arm around her.
“Don’t worry, at least you know she’ll be back this time.” He told her gently and kissed her hair. Astrid leaned further into his shoulder.
“I know,” she sighed. “But you’re lucky that Toothless gets to stay with you.”
Like clockwork, though, Toothless got up from behind them, both Hiccup and Astrid toppling backwards.
“Toothless!” Hiccup chastised. The dragon was becoming testier around Astrid lately. He had expected that when they first started dating. But it had been well over a year at that point, and he and Astrid had seemed to come to a happy medium a long time ago. But since Snoggletog was rearing near, it seemed all bets with Toothless niceness towards Astrid were off the table.
“Did I do something wrong?” Astrid frowned, thinking the same thing.
“I don’t know.” Hiccup sighed, getting up and walking over to Toothless. “What’s wrong with you, bud?
Toothless just went back to nuzzling Hiccup, and Hiccup wrapped his arms loosely around the dragon again, still sighing. “Will you fly Astrid home?” He asked gently, and Toothless jerked back, growling.
“Well I’m not going unless she goes.” Hiccup challenged, his voice stern and final, one voice Toothless knew very well for when Hiccup was being serious. The dragon growled once more but readied himself for flight, resisting the urge to flip Astrid off as she climbed on, and trying desperately to ignore the way her hands traveled up and down Hiccup chest and shoulders and the way her lips nibbled at his ear as they flew home.
A gentle kiss goodnight was all Toothless would allow before Toothless shoved his way in between them and instead of being mad, Astrid just looked saddened.
“Well, goodnight Hiccup, Toothless.” She leaned her hand forward to pet him, but the dragon growled at her. She frowned. “Goodnight…”she said again.
Hiccup stomped inside, his heavy movements were more than enough for Toothless to know his human was upset. But the dragon was being stubborn. At least the girl wasn’t biting Hiccup’s lips anymore, emitting pheromones that Toothless could smell a mile away.
He snuffed out the feelings of guilt and went over to Hiccup’s bed while boy removed his vest, boot, and prosthetic, even the weight of his hands on the edge of the bed was heavy.
And finally Hiccup looked up at Toothless, disappointment in his eyes being an understatement.
“What’s wrong, Toothless?” Hiccup tottered between sounding like a father and just sounding angry. “You hurt Astrid’s feelings and there was no reason for it. Especially since she was already upset about Stormfly being gone for mating.”
And suddenly, a wire connected in the back of his mind.
Toothless seemed said at the rookery being among all the mating dragons yet he had no significant other. And then all of the sudden he showed such animosity towards Astrid and him whenever they were together.
“Is that was this is about?” Hiccup asked after many moments of silence and puzzle piecing. “Are you jealous of Astrid and Me?”
Toothless perked up, almost…..happy that Hiccup had figured it out. Toothless moved close to Hiccup, purring.
“Toothless,” Hiccup smiled and petted the dragon’s head, still trying to chastise him but finding the dragon’s jealousy amusing. “What did I tell you about being selfish?” He asked gently. “I know you’re feeling alone, but that doesn’t mean you have to make everyone else lonely as well.” He looked Toothless in the eyes. “Plus, there’s no reason for you to feel lonely. You’ll always have me whether I have a girlfriend or not. Okay, bud?”
But Toothless didn’t look comforted. The happiness in the dragons eyes left immediately and he snuffed away, frustrated. Hiccup was a little shocked, thinking he had finally solved the problem. Toothless, instead, went to his corner in the room and proceeded to burn the ground around him before going to sleep, doing all of it in a general fuss.
Hiccup knew better then to try and reason with Toothless when he got that. The dragon would pout through the night and hopefully wake up with w new mindset.
And with that Hiccup blew out the last of the candles and went to sleep himself. But oddly, he couldn’t get the events of the day out of his mind.
Astrid had told practically told him that she wanted to have his children….
And his dragon was jealous of his girlfriend…
